10 Important Points in Applying for an E-85 Rebate.

Introduction

The Illinois Environmental Protection Agency administers the Alternate Fuels Rebate Program, which provides rebates for the use of E-85 fuel. The program began in 1998 and over $2.5 million in rebates for several types of alternate fuels have been issued through 2005. All businesses, local governments, organizations, and individuals in Illinois are eligible to apply for a rebate. The only entity excluded from the program is the federal government. Rebates may be issued to any applicant for up to 300 vehicles.

E-85 Fuel Rebate

The rebate is associated with each flexible fuel vehicle using E-85. An applicant for an E-85 Fuel Rebate may apply for and receive a rebate for each flexible fuel vehicle using E-85 for up to three consecutive years. In order to be eligible for a fuel rebate, the vehicle must refuel with E-85 at least 50 percent of the time during the calendar year. Individual applicants need to save the fuel receipts for E-85 purchases made in Illinois during the calendar year (January through December). To be eligible for an E-85 Fuel Rebate, please complete a separate application form for each vehicle and attach the E-85 fuel receipts to the corresponding application form for that vehicle, along with the completed W-9 form.

Rebate Amounts

The rebate amounts for E-85 are currently set at $450 or $340 per flexible fuel vehicle, depending on the number of miles driven during the year for that vehicle. The approved rebate will be $450 if the vehicle travels more than 17,500 miles or $340 if it travels less than that during the year. The Illinois EPA will issue rebates as determined by the availability of funds in the Alternate Fuels Fund.

Application Due Date

E-85 Fuel Rebates are only processed at the end of the year. All rebate applications must be submitted by January 31, 2008. Do not submit an E-85 Fuel Rebate application until the end of the year in order to include all E-85 receipts for the entire year. For more information on the Illinois Alternate Fuels Rebate Program, first go to www.illinoisgreenfleets.org. If you have questions, call (217) 557-1441.
